BBC News called out for mortifying map blunder – but can you spot it? | The Sun

BBC viewers have blasted the broadcaster after a mortifying map blunder on last night’s episode of Newsnight.

On last night’s episode of BBC Newsnight, presenter Kirsty Wark welcomed journalist Mark Urban and former British Ambassador to the U.S. Sir Kim Darroch to discuss Hamas and the escalating war in Israel.

They kicked off the show by discussing the significance of Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s visit to the region yesterday.

Mark then explained that the Prime Minister met with the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia as part of a diplomatic mission to head off the possibility of an escalating regional conflict in the area.

To illustrate his discussion of how Iran could fit into the possible conflict, he asked for a map to be made visible on the screen.

One quickly came up behind Sir Kim, showing Lebanon, Syria, Israel, Iran and Iraq.

However, there was a huge mistake on the screen that Mark thankfully caught.

“Iraq and Iran – I think the labels have been put the wrong way round there,” he explained.

Kirsty ignored the comment and continued the conversation about Iran. However, the map, which portrayed the correct topography of the area but was mislabelled, was quickly removed from the screen and not used again during the show.

Catching the glaring error at home, viewers took to X, formerly Twitter, to discuss it among themselves.

One said: “BBC map puts Iran where Iraq is. Oops.”

Meanwhile, another viewer blasted the BBC for their glaring mistake: “Oops, surely the BBC was meant to have been taught geography in kindergarten.”

They added: “I hope they’re not using that map to dispatch their reporters on assignment.”

The on-screen blunder came just hours after Kirsty announced her departure from the BBC news show yesterday.

She made the announcement on the same day she celebrated her 30th anniversary of presenting Newsnight.

Kirsty plans to leave after the U.K.’s next general election next year.

Speaking on her departure, she explained: “Last year I spoke to both to the Director General Tim Davie and to Stewart and signalled my desire to end my three-decade run on the show after the next election, and that’s the plan.

“When the time comes, it will be a massive wrench. However, I’ll be leaving Newsnight but not the BBC.

“I’ll still be presenting The Reunion and Start the Week on Radio 4, TV documentaries too as well as finishing, finally, my third novel. There are exciting times ahead,” she concluded.
