Coronation Street has confirmed that Tyrone Dobbs will be stepping away from the cobbles this Christmas.

The fan favourite character, played by Alan Halsall, has been a regular on the cobbles since 1998. And for over 20 years, the mechanic has been involved in several big storylines.

However this month Tyrone will be exiting the soap – but it won’t be forever. His reason for leaving the soap is down to actor Alan recovering from major surgery.

Tyrone’s exit storyline begins when Evelyn Plummer (Maureen Lipman) suggests that he takes his children to see wide Fiz Stape in Norfolk. Fans will recall how Fiz Brown (Jennie McAlpine) left the soap in the summer to take a high-paid job.

Back in November, Alan shared that he underwent major knee surgery and said it could take him up to a year to fully recover. The ITV actor posted a photo of him lying in bed with a bandaged knee to his Instagram account.

In the accompanying caption, Alan, who plays mechanic Tyrone Dobbs in the soap, wrote: "ACL Reconstruction surgery. Well, On Friday I underwent ACL reconstruction surgery.

“I have been told the surgery went really well. I know have a long 9 to 12 months of rehabilitation ahead of me but I am sure with the support of family and friends I'll get there.”

He sent a thank you messaged to the hospital who treated him, penning: "Thank you to the amazing staff, at Oaklands xx" and also thanked his girlfriend, the actress Tisha Merry, his partner, 30, who has been helping to care for him at home. He finished the caption with: "and also thanks to my very own nurse ratched @missdrewmerry93 any rehab tips or advise??"

Tyrone isn’t the only cobbles resident to be leaving Coronation Street this Christmas. Soap icon Peter Barlow is also exiting the programme.

After more than a decade on screens, Peter, played by Chris Gascoyne, will be saying goodbye to Weatherfield in scenes this month. The news of Chris’s exit was reported back in July, with a source claiming he feels it’s the “right time” for him to pursue other projects.

On-screen, Peter is currently reeling in the aftermath of Stephen Reid’s murder. Alcoholic Peter mowed down the serial killer before his grand escape from the cobbles.

Last week, Peter ran home and broke down in floods of tears to Carla. He confessed how badly he was struggling to come to terms with his actions last month.

Peter admitted that he couldn't help but replay the devastating moment he ran over Stephen with his car. He pleaded: "It plays on repeat every time I open my eyes. The only break I get is when I go to sleep but then it's back again when I wake up.”

It was at this point that Carla suggested that Peter visit a counsellor to talk through his feelings and forgive himself. But the hunk quickly wrote that off and admitted that he was toying with the idea of draining a bottle of whisky.
