Corries Beverley Callard heartbroken after dear friend tragically died in her arms
Corrie's Beverley Callard has revealed her heartbreak after a 'dear friend' died in her arms.
The 66 year old actress, who is best-known for playing Liz McDonald on Coronation Street, recently took part in Channel 4 show Don't Look Down, which will air tonight, on Tuesday, October 10, for Stand up to Cancer.
The show is hosted by Take Me Out star Paddy McGuinness, 50, and it will see nine celebs go into the Austrian Alps to learn how to high wire walk, and face a series of vertigo-inducing tasks to prepare them for one final challenge – to wire walk 90 metres above one of London’s most iconic landmarks.
Speaking ahead of the show, Beverley made a heartbreaking confession, as she spoke about the personal impact that cancer has had on her life.
She said: “I had cancer when I was 32 – I’m absolutely fine now. But a very dear friend of mine died in my arms a few years ago of cancer and another is suffering from bone cancer now. I even lost a very young dog to cancer.
"I think when you talk to people, it touches everybody in some way; even if it’s not touched them personally, it’s touched someone they love."
She continued: "Before we went, they said the training would be in Austria and it will be to help you with your core strength and with heights. However, they didn’t say we’d be jumping off bridges – oh my God. Paddy and I were the first to do the challenge on the bridge. We had to go to the highest bridge in Europe…
"Climb over the wall of the bridge and stand on this miniscule platform with our heels hanging over the edge. They harnessed us together as well. We thought, is it a bungee? They explained, it wasn’t a bungee, we just fall till the rope has gone tight, and then we swing."
Beverley is no stranger to facing challenges on a TV show, as she previously starred on ITV's I'm A Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here! in 2020.
Speaking about new show Don't Look Down, host Paddy said: “Some people have really struggled and there were lots of tears.
“But they’re a really good group and everyone’s really supportive of each other.”
Taking on the challenge alongside Beverley is footballer Anton Ferdinand, Pussycat Doll Kimberly Wyatt, Love Islander Chris Hughes, French soccer legend David Ginola, adventurer Charley Boorman, TikTok star GK Barry (Grace), comedian Fats Timbo and Olympic champion cyclist Victoria Pendleton.
