Sarah Ferguson admits ‘it’s ok to cry’ as she shares moment she got diagnosis

GMB: Sarah Ferguson opens up about breast cancer diagnosis

Sarah Ferguson has opened up about the moment doctors heartbreakingly told her she had breast cancer as she reveals “it’s okay to cry”. The 64-year-old appeared on Tuesday’s instalment of Good Morning Britain and shared her cancer battle with hosts Susanna Reid and Ed Balls.

She expressed: “I had the most incredible people helping me, Women’s Health, the lovely Amelia, and it is okay to cry, it’s okay to be terrified. It’s okay to say I really am terrified but together we can be strong to get through it.”

Susanna, 53, asked The Duchess of York: “Did you find out in that moment? Did they say, ‘We can see something?’, or did it come in the analysis of the results?

She revealed: “I could see them move very quickly. ‘We’ll just do another one, oh we’ll just do this,’ and I was saying, ‘No, no, but you haven’t found anything have you? I’m fine aren’t I?’.”

Ed, 56, enquired: “They thought it was a shadow didn’t they.” Sarah responded: “Yes, they did. It was like a splat. It was better to have it removed, and I don’t know, I kind of like them,” she said as she looked down at her chest area.

The mum-of-two shared the news that she had breast cancer in June, after she was diagnosed following a routine check-up.

She underwent a gruelling eight-hour operation at London’s King Edward VIII’s hospital earlier that month.

Her concerns began when a routine check-up detected something was wrong, shortly before the King’s Coronation in May.

In early May, Sarah attended an appointment in London for a mammogram and, despite expecting the all-clear, the technician explained that a “shadow” could be seen in the breast.

At the time of her sharing the news, Sarah explained that, due to the size of the area, a lumpectomy was ruled out.

She then said that she had been strongly advised to opt for a single mastectomy, with her telling friends that she had “no choice” but to go ahead.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV1 and ITVX.
