Top Boy’s season 2 finale saw Sully murder Jamie on his doorstep

Top Boy: Season 3 official trailer on Netflix

WARNING: This article contains spoilers from Top Boy.

Top Boy is returning for one last series but what was the reason behind Sully killing Jamie in the season two finale?

Sully (played by Kane “Kano” Robinson) stunned Netflix subscribers when he showed up at Jamie’s (Micheal Ward) front door and shot him twice in the chest and once in the head.

Jamie’s brothers Aaron (Hope Ikpoku Jnr) and Stef (Araloyin Oshunremi) couldn’t believe their eyes as Sully walked away, leaving the youngsters devastated, just as they thought their lives were taking a turn for the better.

Prior to pulling the trigger, Sully didn’t say a word, giving no explanation to Jamie as to why he wanted to see him dead.

But this explosive moment had been building up, not only throughout the latest episodes but in prior seasons as well.

Why did Sully kill Jamie in Top Boy?

There are many reasons why Sully could have killed Jamie but the biggest one is the fact that he simply didn’t trust him.

Back in season one which aired on Channel 4, Dris (Shone Romulus) who Sully ended up shooting 20 times on a rooftop, had betrayed him and Dushane (Ashley Walters).

He had given information to the London Fields gang which Jamie was then a part of who, along with Jermaine (Bashy) and Modie (Dave), tried to kill Sully, fatally shooting two of his fellow gang members and seriously injuring him as well.

So Sully was far from best pleased when Dushane told him in the latest season that he planned to keep Jamie around after proving his loyalty by killing his best friend Kit (Kadeem Ramsey) who was responsible for Ats’s (Keiyon Cook) death.

Throughout the season, Dushane made it clear that working with Jamie was part of his and Sully’s “retirement plan” but the latter didn’t agree with this.

He also grew weary of Jamie after meeting him in Morocco where drug lord Juan said that Dushane’s prodigy had spoken of his “own big plans”.

So he had suspected Jamie was playing the long game and may not have Dushane’s best interests at heart, especially after ruthlessly killing his own best friend.

It had been teased that Sully wasn’t on the same page as Dushane during their time in Morocco when Jamie said: “Dushane told me everything that happened in the past is done”, to which Sully simply replied: “Dushane don’t speak for me.”

There may have been some other long-term factors that played a role in Jamie’s death as well.

Sully was suffering from PTSD after the death of Jason (Ricky Smarts) in the season one house fire that he wasn’t able to save him from.

He must also still feel guilty over murdering his once close friend Dris as well, despite his initial betrayal.

So while Sully did want to see Jamie gone for good, there may have been other factors at play that led him to pull the trigger.

Top Boy season three premieres on Thursday, September 7, on Netflix.
